Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson, Sr., born September 18, 1951, is a Republican candidate in the 2016 presidential election. A retired neurosurgeon, he was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland from 1984 until his retirement in 2013. Among his achievements as a surgeon are separation of conjoined twins and a technique for controlling brain seizures, which were recognized in 2008 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has written several books on his medical career and political stances and is a graduate of Yale University.
